Reading takes you places. |
The Benefits of Reading as a Habit.
Ever imagined how we'd be without books. How much information would be lost or go unnoticed. Discoveries from half the world away that would never reach us. Fantastic stories that we would never hear of or recite to our kids. Some of the wisdom from past generations that may be helpful to us would have died along with them. For me, books are fun, they are as educating as they are entertaining. That's not all though, books do a lot more that just educate and give us a good time or something to think about. Should we make reading a Habit in our lives, we are in for some unexpected benefits. Here's a list of some of these.Improves Memory.
It is a commonly accepted fact, that if you don’t use your memory, you lose it. Reading, helps you stretch your "memory muscles", as it requires remembering details, facts and figures and in literature, plot lines, themes and characters and concepts. It demands you that remember or keep certain information in mind for the next line of information to make sense. Continued reading gradually develops the memory faculty so as to accommodate the vast amounts of data that reading entails. This doesn't happen overnight though, but it has been proven to really help the many people we have struggling with their memory.Improves Concentration and Focus.
Reading books requires brain power. It requires you to focus on what you are reading for long periods. Books tell the whole story. Since you must concentrate in order to read, like a muscle, you will get better at concentration. In reading more you're called to concentrate more thereby increasing your concentration's span and depth. Focus is an important component of a successful life and it is an acquired skill, so ensure that you read and keep improving it.It makes You a Better Communicator
Well, this is one of the most important ones. Reading helps you organise facts. Books are written in a way that allows you to follow a particular line of thought in clear successive stages. You notice how a storyline unfolds, how a case is built and so on. As a consequence, as you continue to read, you begin to take that same ability to have clarity of information and its presentation. You begin to grade information accordingly, what's important, what's not and when to present it. Believe you me, the ability to be able to present information in a clear and understandable manner is not as common as it sounds, very few people actually have it. Reading books could be just one of the ways to attain it. The good thing is, you'll be hitting two birds with one stone, learning or being entertained whilst improving your communication.Improves Vocabulary
In reading books, we encounter new words. Each reading session, reveals a new set of unfamiliar words, this aggregation adds up and enriches our vocabulary. In Primary school when you learned how to infer the meaning of one word by reading the context of the other words in the sentence? You get the same benefit from book reading. While reading books, especially challenging ones, you will find yourself exposed to many new words you wouldn’t be otherwise been acquainted with.Improved Writing Skills
This isn’t much of a stretch, considering that reading improves vocabulary and critical thinking. You become a better writer as you constantly surrounding yourself with works from people who are better than you. Art students learn to copy masterpieces, so they know what creating something incredible should feel like. Likewise with writing, you learn better the art of writing by reading writings written with art.Stimulates your Creativity
Reading exposes us to a great many imaginary lands, bizzare scenarios and unfamiliar situations. Our minds envision the story, fable, or theory unfold, in so doing it creates its model of the scenario. This increases the brain's ability to perceive things. In time it improves one's capacity to grasp new concepts and ideas.Reduces Stress
Unknown to many the best way to unwind is by reading. Reading calms the mind, creates an aura of peace and comfort and closes every other thing (even troubling thoughts) out. It relaxes better than the best TV programme would. If relaxation is something you want, turn off the TV or computer and pick up a book.Learn from Anywhere
Books are portable. You can take them almost anywhere. As such, you can learn almost anywhere too. They afford us the liberty to add to our knowledge base at anytime, any place. You’ll Discover Surprises
As you read more books as a source of information, you’ll learn stuff you weren’t looking for. I’ve read many great quotes on life and love by reading books on marketing. I’ve learned facts about biology from reading about chemistry. Oh yes! I’ve picked up some facts about history while reading about programming. Since so many subjects intertwine it’s almost impossible not to learn something other than the book’s subject. So, lets get reading, and learning.Even by reading this, you have benefited from at least one of the things above. Get that book today and dig in. You may not feel it today but you are subtly improving and slowly sharpening yourself in many areas. Reading is fun though to be honest. Love that Bookshelf!
